DE SWARTE MOSSEL
WHERE MEMORIES ARE MADE
YOUR PERFECT WEST COAST ESCAPE
Leave your worries in the sand
Need to take a break from the worries of everyday life, De Swarte Mossel is the perfect place to enjoy some well earned rest.
Being close to the sea and all that sand puts you in a different kind of mindset & time appears to stop when you dip your toes in the water.

"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever."
What our guest says
Beautiful and peaceful house.
We had a great stay in the well-equipped house. The surroundings are beautiful. The place is clean and we were kindly welcomed. Can recommend it to anyone who wants to break away from the city’s noise.

Our Corner Of The World

Hondeklip Bay,beach town with a rich history
Hondeklip (‘Dog Stone’) Bay in the Northern Cape has had many incarnations, from being a humble trading store to a copper port, a crayfishing centre to a diamond diving hub. Today it’s happy to host long-distance tourists who love far-flung adventures and a plate of seafood on a distant beach.
The Dog Stone
A big gneiss rock resembling a dog inspired Thomas Grace to name Hondeklipbaai, which translated, would mean “Dog Stone Bay”. During 1853 the “dog” was defaced when its ear was chopped of and taken to Cape Town in order to start the fictitious “Dog’s Ear Copper Company”. During a severe lightning storm in the 1970’s, it lost its nose as well.
Spitfire Rock
Spectacular “spits” and sprays as the sea blasts against this rock. An excellent location to take stunning photographs.
The Aristea Shipwreck
The Aristea, an I & J fishing trawler, survived WWII but not the onslaught of her tipsy captain and the shores of Hondeklip Bay. She ran aground on the 4th July 1945.
